Oracle SQL Developer problem – backspace / delete button not working – quick fix

Whenever I have to deal with Oracle 10g projects at work, Oracle SQL Developer always comes in handy.

However yesterday, the backspace and delete button inside the SQL query editor, all of a sudden, stopped working!
I tried restarting the Oracle SQL Developer, even restarting the computer, but the problem persisted.

I didn’t want to uninstall/re-install the application, so I went on to search the Oracle official forums.
Seems like other people had the exact same problem, and the solution was quite simple!

To resolve the problem you have to go to:
Tools -> Preferences -> Accelerators -> Load Preset -> Default -> OK

Tools is on the main menu (File, Edit… etc), on the left of Help.

My version of Toad doesn’t have the accelerator option. This fix will work for everyone that doesn’t have the accelerator default option.

The file “plsqlkeys.bin” is getting corrupted. Do the following:

1. Close TOAD.
2. Delete “plsqlkeys.bin” from your \User Files directory.
(C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle\User Files)
3. Reopen TOAD and see whether those keys now work.

Awesome – I’ve seen this in JDeveloper as well, and jumped through many hoops trying to fix it, including an SR with Oracle (that didn’t bear fruit). Ugly bug, but an easy fix – many thanks!

Thanks decoding, this is solved my prob too. Just FYI to all, since this post has been running, (Jan 2008), this problem seems to be a recurring issue, and any of the SQLDeveloper updates haven’t sorted it out!

I am on v1.5.1 Build 5440.. Which if i remember correctly was released quite recently.

I actually reverted back to using TOAD for a couple days.

aarghh… i experienced this problem months ago and tried to remove the sql developer and reinstall other version of it… still have the same problem till i decided to user dreamcoder..

today i search google for “sql developer cannot delete” and i found this post… followed the instruction and VOILA!!!

This was great. It is April Fool’s day, and I had been playing pranks all over the office (tape over mouse lasers, flipping mouse buttons, screenshot backgrounds…all the classics). I step away for a minute and my SQL Developer quits with not only back space, but also home, end, page up and down and arrow keys. I figured I had been pranked good. 15 minutes later I find this post and realize that it was really just God pranking me.

Sequence of events :

1) No BackSpace or Delete (pulls hair)
2) Considered re-installation
3) reconsidered – Opened Google – found this site
4) 10 seconds later all is well…

I am using Toad 8.5.3 for Oracle 9i. Now I facing a Problem at It sql editor. When type any thing after that if I want to modify it by pressing delete key or Backspace key then it is not functioning both of this key. What can i do now.

Hi I am using Windows XP and have just started to have a problem with my delete and tab keys. I went into Tools, but only have the options, Map Network Drive, Disconnect Network Drive, Synchronize and Folder Options.
Please help.

What a crappy Oracle tool.

I had the problem that suddenly the Enter key was not working anymore. I was almost desperate

But your solution fixed it.

Even the installing SQL Dev is easy task – Re-Install doesn’t solve the issue in this case.

Anyhow your suggestion is much MORE quicker and easier than a re-install.
